Volunteering for Summer School

Teaching at JHS

Coming as a volunteer teacher on the Jian Hua Summer School 2010

Dates: The Jian Hua Summer School 2010 runs from Monday 12th July until Friday 6th August. Classes are planned for mornings and afternoons Monday to Friday, with free time at the weekends. Volunteer teachers will need to arrive a few days before the Summer School starts to get settled in and to take part in our orientation, ideally arriving on Friday 9th July.

What it involves: The Summer School for volunteer teachers consists of four weeks of English language teaching, approximately 3 hours a day, 5 days per week, to classes of 16 Chinese students. The students are aged from 6 years up to high school/university age. Our maximum class size is 16.
We also hold English conversation zone (E-zone) every evening Monday to Friday, 6:30 to 8pm, during the Summer School. These provide opportunities for high school and college students to come in and practise their English with our volunteer teachers. E-zone is an excellent opportunity for language learners to interact with English language teachers in a relaxed atmosphere.

Accommodation: Comfortable accommodation will be provided for volunteers in an apartment at the school.

Food: The school will provide three meals a day on teaching days. During weekends you’ll be free to explore the local delicacies!

Saturday Excursions: The school will arrange some excursions to local tourist spots such as Luigong Island and Weihai zoo or you may just prefer to relax on the beach.

Costs: You need to pay the return airfare from your home to Weihai (WEH) or Yantai (YNT) airport. You can plan a route all the way here or you can fly out to Beijing or other major city in China and then buy a ticket for a connecting flight. When you get to the airport, transport will be provided to take you to the school. Detailed instructions on travelling to China will be supplied if you are accepted. In addition to this, a general expenses fee of 1000RMB (approx. US$130) paid to the school will cover transportation, food and utilities for the four weeks.

What you need: You need a tourist (L) visa to come to China. You can apply at the Chinese Embassy in your country. There is a fee of between US$60-100 and it usually takes a few days to process.
You will also need your own travel insurance policy. The school will do its utmost to look after you while you are here, but cannot provide medical or travel insurance for you.
